Most every industry was upside-down with supply-chain frustrations in early 2022 in the afterburn of the pandemic mayhem. Landscape construction and contracting were no exception, though the problems of supply, price rises, and delivery seemed especially agonizing around projects where sequence is critical and the staple products—plants—have to arrive alive. But pandemic backlogs were compounded by a freak ice storm and even by certain hangover symptoms from the Great Recession a decade earlier. Usually it’s hard to get business owners to talk about problems. In this case, they had much to tell me.
