When the remnants of Hurricane Helene devastated western North Carolina in September 2024, among the losses were a number of specialty nurseries the region holds in unusual abundance. Growers who raise landscape and ornamental trees, shrubs, and perennial plants—often the long way, from seed—saw hundreds of thousands of plants washed away by rising streams or landslides.
