As Suburbs Grow, So Do Waistlines

This story, middling as it is, began a change in my focus from architecture to land use and, eventually, toward landscapes. After a decade of covering architecture and planning, it was the first signal that planning professionals were collaborating with public health experts to address the physical and mental effects of environmental design on a mass scale. It also shot to the top of the Times’s most-emailed list for much of a week, not because of the beautiful writing but because readers sat up to read about dissatisfaction with their surroundings.
