For reasons known mainly to me and the friend who went with me, this was the perfect assignment for me at the time when it came in the spring of 2001: to attend the big annual daffodil competition in Gloucester, Virginia. There are, as the story notes, a whole succession of daffodil contests from south to north during the season. This one would be among the majors if it were a true sport—really the only major.
