Olmsted Woods, part of the Washington National Cathedral grounds, is just five acres, yet it reflects the ecological decline seen in forests across the Chesapeake Bay region caused by urbanization and, increasingly, by climate extremes. This story reports on a landscape strategy to reverse an otherwise inevitable loss of important wildlife habitat and safeguard the site as a reservoir of biodiversity.

In 2025, this story was awarded a Bradford Williams Medal by the American Society of Landscape Architects, which recognizes exemplary reporting and writing about landscape architecture.
