Bradford McKee

Bradford McKee is an editor and writer on environmental design, climate, ecology, public policy, and culture. In 2010, he began a decade as the editor in chief of Landscape Architecture Magazine, and led the magazine’s redesign and relaunch during its 100th year. The renewed LAM received numerous awards and in 2014 was a finalist for a National Magazine Award for general excellence. Brad began covering design as the news editor of the magazine Architecture, where later he would be named a senior editor and, later, an editor at large, and eventually joined its successor magazine, Architect, reporting on the business of design and construction worldwide.

Locally, Brad was a contributing writer at Washington City Paper before joining the staff as its arts editor, directing the paper’s critical and cultural coverage. He then worked for six years as a contract reporter for The New York Times and was named a contributing editor of I.D. magazine.

As a freelancer, Brad has written for magazines and newspapers including Slate, Men's Journal, Metropolitan Home, Harper's Bazaar, The Architect's Newspaper, and The Washington Post.

From 2019 to 2024, Brad served on the board of Rock Creek Conservancy in Washington and for three years was its vice-chair.

For much of the 2000s, Brad worked as a nursery hand, selling and caring for woody shrubs and trees.

As an editor, Brad has been a frequent presenter and moderator and has served on multiple awards juries and selection panels. His books include three monographs on architecture and landscape architecture; most recently, Brad was the editor of a fourth book on 12 major park and public realm projects by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, titled The Land Is Full (Monacelli, 2024). He lives in Washington, D.C.
